Quiz Answer Key

1. What is the average lifespan of a firefighter?

Answer: 84. Contrary to popular belief, the lifespan of a firefighter has actually improved over the years, even though they are exposed to many carcinogens, dangerous fumes, extreme heat, and many other on-the-job dangers. So how can a firefighter's life expectancy have improved to the point where it actually matches a cashier's? For one, firefighters exercise better than most people. In addition, safety equipment and training have greatly improved over the years.

2. What percentage of firefighters are women?

Answer:3.8 percent. The current number of active women firefighters is 295,000. Back in 1986, the number was 170,000. In about 30 years, the number has almost doubled.

The Firefighter's Prayer

When I am called to duty, God
whenever flames may rage,
give me the strength to save some life
Whatever be its age.
Help me to embrace a little child
before it’s too late,
or some older person
from the horror of that fate.
Enable me to be alert
and hear the weakest shout,
and quickly and efficiently
to put the fire out.
I want to fill my calling
and give the best in me,
to guard my neighbor
and protect his property.
and if according to my fate
I am to lose my life,
Please bless with your protecting hand
my children and my wife.

Interesting hub, Joel. I am an ex-volunteer firefighter and secretary of the local brigade. Unfortunately the quiz questions don't show up for me, only the expanded answers. Oh well, the stats are worth reading.
